Mercedes-Benz Introduces Active Safety Buckles

As an adult, you probably rarely ride in the backseat of your car. But you must have, at least once in your life, encountered the frustration that is the lost seat buckle. You get in the car, and you pull the belt across your lap, only to realize that you can't find the second part of the equation: the buckle itself. It's settled way down between the cushions, and you can dig for it, or you can forfeit the seatbelt altogether.

We have a hunch that the majority of us would just give it up. We're particularly certain that our kids won't hunt for it for very long before they let the belt snap back behind the seat. But, companies like Mercedes-Benz, who are always looking for ways to make your car ride safer and easier, have started installing Active seatbelt buckles in the backseats of many of their vehicles.

How does that work? Well, when the back door of the vehicle is opened, it activates a system that extends the belt buckle up to 2.7-inches out from the upholstery, and then illuminates the insertion slot to make it even easier to buckle up. Once you (or your passenger) is safely buckled in, the motor then retracts the buckle up to 1.6-inches to assure that the belt fits properly.

But Mercedes-Benz has taken this even one step further with their PRE-SAFE accident-prevention technology. This system is activated during critical driving situations, or when the vehicle detects that other objects are in close range. The belt then tightens by as much as 3.1-inches to keep the strapped-in passenger even more secure in the event of a collision.

And, they're not quite done yet. Mercedes-Benz has even started working on seatbelts that are easier to unfasten in case of an accident. Rather, the safety belts will keep you and your passengers secure in the event of an accident, but will make it easier for rescue teams to free crash victims from the vehicle.

As of today, there is no official release date for Mercedes-Benz' active seatbelt technology. But we're sure the wait won't be long.
